Readers rely on us to get the facts right. This is how we check them before and after publication.
Before we publish
- Find the original source. We trace claims, statistics and quotes back to the document, dataset, filing or person they came from.
- Confirm with more than one source. Important claims need independent confirmation. A single anonymous source is not enough.
- Check numbers. We verify figures, dates, names, titles and spellings, and recheck calculations.
- Verify images and video. We check where and when media was captured and that it has not been altered or taken out of context.
- Editor review. A second person reads the story before it goes live.
Social media and viral claims
We do not report claims from social media as fact. We look for the original post, check the account, and confirm with a reliable source before we publish.
Breaking news
When news is developing, we say what is confirmed and what is not. We update the story as facts are verified and note the time of significant updates.
After we publish
If a reader, source or editor finds an error, we review it quickly. Confirmed errors are corrected as described in our Corrections Policy.
