This policy explains the standards our newsroom follows when we gather, write and publish news.
Our mission
We publish accurate, fair and useful news that helps readers understand the world around them.
Independence
Our editors decide what we cover. Advertisers, sponsors, partners and governments do not influence our reporting. Commercial relationships are kept separate from the newsroom.
Accuracy and sourcing
- We rely on primary sources, official records and firsthand reporting wherever possible.
- We name our sources. We use anonymous sources only when there is a clear public interest and the information is confirmed another way.
- We attribute quotes, data and images to their source.
Fairness
We give people and organizations we report on a reasonable chance to respond. We aim to present relevant viewpoints without false balance.
News, analysis and opinion
News reports state facts. Analysis explains context. Opinion pieces express the view of the author. We label analysis and opinion clearly so readers can tell them apart.
Use of AI tools
We may use AI tools to support research, transcription or editing. A human editor reviews and takes responsibility for everything we publish.
Conflicts of interest
Staff and contributors must disclose any personal, financial or political connection to a story. We reassign stories when a conflict cannot be managed.
Errors
We correct mistakes openly. See our Corrections Policy and Fact-Checking Policy.
